JACK, Colin Edward May 13, 1971 - February 26, 2011 It is with great sorrow that we announce Colin's sudden passing. He leaves behind his father Moseley, siblings Byron and Arietha, uncles and aunts; Kenneth (Joan), Eileen (Norbert), Eulan (Rusty), Mayrose and many cousins in Trinidad, Canada and the U.S.A. He was predeceased by his mother Kathleen, grandmother and grandfather Nora and Ted Eckford. He also leaves behind Uncle Tim (Janet) and Tim's son, Tyler, and Uncle Patrick (Dixie). Colin was born in Kamloops and the family moved to Richmond at the age of 4. He attended Grauer Elem, J.N. Burnette and Richmond High. Colin also attended Kwantalen College and U.B.C. where he obtained his B.A. in 2003 and B. Ed in 2004. After graduation Colin taught summer school in West Van before teaching at St. John private school for the last 4 years. As a youngster and teenager, Colin played soccer, ice hockey and baseball. He also did track and field in elementary school. He was a very talented and natural athlete. Colin travelled to Toronto, New York, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago with his family. He also enjoyed camping along the Washington and Oregon Coast. Recently, on behalf of his school he travelled to Singapore and Florida. With his friends Rick and Zayvin they started up Canada's first independent beer tasting and education company (Just Here For The Beer). Colin poured almost as much time and dedication into the beer business as he did into his teaching. We would like to thank all family, friends and neighbours for their support. For details on the Celebration of his life, please go to Facebook pages Colin Jack, Just Here For The Beer or Rick Mohabir. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a scholarship fund we will be starting in Colin's name.

Colin Jack-Just Here For The Beer-Vancouver-RIP

There are so many wonderful things that exist in this world, but we can’t always find it on our own.  Sometimes we need to be shown the door in order to find such greatness, and have it be a part of our lives.  Some of us need to be taught what we’re seeing, before we can see it as something beautiful.  So I’m very sad to say that we lost someone who opened so many doors, and gave vision to those who were blind to beauty.  I’m sad to say we lost an important figure in Vancouver, who reached out to the masses, and opened the door to quality craft beer.  The man I speak of is Colin Jack.  Colin was a columnist for 24 Hours, and ran Just Here For The Beer, which did beer events, beer classes, and a radio show.  Although we were from different worlds, I always gave credit to Colin for reaching out to the masses, and educating them about craft beer.  He was very passionate about what he did, and anyone who met him, would agree on what a great guy he was. So as we pour our beer into a pint, mug, snifter, tulip glass, let’s take the time to appreciate what’s inside the glass.  Let’s take a moment to appreciate the glass that’s full with color, life and character, in respect to those whose glasses are completely empty right now from this loss.  Let’s appreciate what’s inside the glass, in respect to Colin Jack, who cared enough to spread the love, and open doors for others.

Such a "Colin" Pic!

Oh Colin

Webster dictionary defines glue as something that binds together. This is what you were for all of us...the one who kept all the circle of friends together either through movie night, football or hockey game, events or a good old night at the Pi. You have been in my life off and on since we were was 8 years, we have seen a lot, grown together, but no matter where we were in our lifes you were always a phone call away. I know our friendship started because of Arietha, but I have always thought of you as a brother. May you watch over A-dawg as you know he will need it. Miss you always...Dee
Mr. Jack, Arietha and Byron no words can't describe the hole that has been left behind our thoughts are with you.

HE WILL BE MISSED

I grew up down the street from Colin, Arietha, Byron, Mosley and Kathleen. I have fond memories of spending time with the Jacks and feel very fortunate to have met them way back then.

Colin was an amazing person and such a great friend to so many people, making time in his busy life for everyone around him. Every time I saw Colin, he had a big smile on his face and seemed to have a very enthusiastic approach to life. I am grateful for having him as a friend and regretful for not having spent more time in his presence. He is survived by his older brother Byron, his younger sister Arietha, his proud father Mosley and all of his great friends and family who will miss him dearly. His life was too short, but definitely filled with happiness and success with a great group of friends and family surrounding him. I look forward to raising a glass to Colin.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Jacks at this difficult time.

REST IN PIECE MY FRIEND

Derek

Colin Jack

We miss you. Colin was a very special guy. Always opening up their house to host Halloween parties and other various functions. I must thank Roy for introducing Colin to me all those years ago. Expanding the circle of friends.
Yoanna will never forget Colin's big heart. Without Colin we would not have connected with so many different people that came together at his parties or events.
Colin will be deeply missed.

Rest in Peace

Remembering Colin

Dear Arietha, Byron and Mr. Jack

Know that my love and prayers go out to you all.

Most of my memories of Colin are from "back in the day", but even back then he was larger than life. He loved having a good time and loved making sure everyone around him had a good time as well. He loved surrounding himself with good people, special friends and his family.

Mr. Jack - I have so much respect and admiration for you and Mrs. Jack. How pround you must be, raising 3 wonderful children. They have touched so many people and these lives are so much better for knowing Arietha, Colin and Byron.

You cannot make sense as to why Colin is longer with us in this life. It is comforting to know that he is with Mrs. Jack looking down upon you all.  God is lucky to have such a special spirit teach him about the complexity of "beer" ;).

Love you all,
Ann Evangelista

A message sent from the Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society of British Columbia

Community Member,

It is with numb sorrow that I forward the tragic news that Colin Jack has passed away this past weekend.

Regrettably, I have only just heard this news via the channel below and I do not have details regarding the nature of his passing, nor do I have news of any arrangements that the family may be considering. However, this is a terrible event considering Colin's youth, and there can be no doubt that the family is in shock.

Colin is known to many in the local Caribbean community as one of the children of Mosely Jack, a Trinidad pioneer who was a longtime member of the TTCS of BC and supporter of Caribbean Days Festival in the 1990s and beyond. Colin himself came to be a regular volunteer at the Festival in the 2000s, working long shifts in the beer garden many years.

Colin was a personal friend of mine. Although I have not been asked to do so, I hope the family will pardon me for sharing a few more words with you about this young man, who accomplished so much in such a short time.

Aside from being a second-generation Caribbean Canadian, a connection I have shared with Colin for years has been our mutual interest in the craft beer industry. After graduating from the University of BC, Colin's enthusiasm and drive in this regard resulted in the building of a business called Just Here For The Beer which has pursued goals such as consumer education regarding food pairings with the more sophisticated examples of this oft-underestimated beverage category. Colin and his close friends established an annual festival known as the Canada Cup Of Beer which became the largest annual event of its type in Vancouver. Colin's expertise in this area was so well respected that he became widely known and quoted as a beer industry expert that the media called on regularly, and ultimately hosted a monthly radio talk show focusing on this topic.

I have a clear memory of seeing Colin with his friends at a major Victoria festival in 2005, as pictured in the attached photo, surveying the grounds and planning their own fledgling festival. I will always be in awe of the ambition and ability to make dreams happen that Colin possessed.

No doubt a much more complete remembrance will be written of Colin. From my perspective, this is a very untimely loss indeed.

Regretfully,
